A study published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine found that repeating PSMA PET scans in patients with recurrent prostate cancer who had an initial negative scan significantly aids in management decisions. Nearly 50% of the 210 patients studied experienced a change in their treatment approach after a second scan, with 56% showing evidence of disease. The study highlighted that patients with higher PSA levels and a PSA doubling time of less than twelve months were more likely to have positive results upon re-scanning. These findings underscore the importance of PSMA PET imaging in identifying disease extent, enhancing treatment planning for clinicians dealing with prostate cancer recurrence. Additionally, new research suggests that PSMA PET/CT tests could reduce the need for biopsy by half in cases of ambiguous MRI results.
